GENERAL INFORMATION, ITINERARIES, DATES, AND PRICES

GET UP AND GO! CAMPING: Experience wild Alaska for yourself this summer on an active and exciting 6 to 28-day Alaska Camping or 'Camp & Cabin'-based Multi-Sport / Hiking tour.

IN OR OUT? HOW ABOUT SOME OF EACH? 'Camp & Cabin' simply means we tent camp in organized campgrounds 3 or 4 nights a week (depending on which tour itinerary you choose; we provide the tents and all other gear except your sleeping bag and pad), and stay in shared, modern cabins (often with access to saunas) 2 or 3 nights a week.

As outlined in our Alaska Tour Selector webpage, most of our tours are offered in both 'Camp & Cabin' and Lodge-based formats. All of our tours, regardless of accommodation styles, feature great daily hiking, included adventure sport activities (such as glacier trekking, sea kayaking, canoeing and whitewater rafting), regular wildlife viewing opportunities, delicious food, and lots of fun and adventure.

WHY CAMP? Alaska is truly an outdoor lover's paradise, and camping is the best, most direct way to experience it. There's no better way to cap a day of Alaskan hiking and adventuring than sharing stories around a crackling campfire and enjoying a delicious, home-cooked meal (prepared by someone else!) in a beautiful, natural setting. The fact that the Midnight Sun is still shining makes it that much more enjoyable and special.

Alaskan hotels are expensive and tend to isolate you from the nature and beauty you've come to Alaska to experience. Camping gets you out there, away from the phones, televisions, crowds, and, well, you know what we're talking about. With our popular 'Camp & Cabin'-based Alaska tours, you can enjoy the best of both worlds: the fun and beauty of camping in the Great Outdoors, and the familiarity and comfort of an occasional bed in a warm, cozy cabin.

NEVER CAMPED BEFORE? NO PROBLEM! We'll have you "up and going" in no time, and by the end of the tour you'll be an old pro, ready for your next camping adventure. And unlike any other low-priced Alaska tour company, all Get Up and Go! Camping and Camp & Cabin-based Multi-Sport / Hiking tours with more than seven guests (maximum ten or twelve) feature not one, but TWO GUIDES.

"The trip was outstanding, it far exceeded our expectations. And I have to tell you, after reading through your website and talking to a few of your previous clients, those expectations were pretty high!"
--Roy & Linda Lamm, Atlanta, Georgia

CAMPING and 'CAMP & CABIN' TOURS
GENERAL INFORMATION

WHERE DO WE CAMP? All of our campsites are in carefully selected, developed campgrounds, with the quality of their natural setting being the first priority. Some are in state parks, others are privately operated; some are in the middle of nowhere, still others are in or on the edges of small towns. Some feature full facilities, from hot water (coin) showers, to laundry rooms, while others are more rustic, offering only a picnic table, fire ring, nearby water pump, and (clean) outhouses. Most campgrounds on our Arctic Explorer are very basic. All are scenically situated.

WHAT ABOUT THESE CABINS? Over the years we've learned that while many people prefer and are excited to camp, most wouldn't mind being treated to the occasional bed, either. So rather than camping out every single night, on Get Up and Go! 'C&C' tours two or three nights per week (depending on which itinerary you choose) are spent at more remote lodges, in cozy, shared cabins or lodge rooms (generally 2-4 people per cabin/room, depending on availability, etc). These lodges are without exception scenically located, remote, and very friendly. They all feature access to showers, and some of them also have saunas. The cabins themselves are somewhat rustic, but certainly comfortable. We think you'll like them!

CAN I GET A SHOWER? Alaskans don't shower, why should I? No, just a little joke, you'll get that once a week shower: whether you need it or not! Seriously, only very rarely is there more than a day between shower possibilities on Camping and Camp & Cabin-based tours.

WHAT ABOUT CAMPING GEAR? Roomy, twin-share tents and all other necessary camping and cooking equipment are provided. After an initial lesson, group members erect their own easily assembled tents. You bring your own 3-season sleeping bag and pad (or rent these from us if you wish). All of our equipment is of high quality, and is well cared for.

AND THE GUIDES? Unlike any other low priced Alaska tour companies, all Get Up and Go! "Camp & Cabin"-based tours with more than seven clients feature TWO GUIDES (excluding Family and Lodge-based tours, which have one guide). Our guides are friendly, capable, and multi-talented men and women who are passionate about Alaska, and about being active in the outdoors. They'll also take a personal interest in you, making sure you are enjoying yourself and your Alaska experience.

Your hard-working guides will organize and coordinate the daily schedule and activities, transport you, keep you informed, guide you on hikes and adventures, feed you (and quite well, if we do say so), handle all the details and any unexpected problems that might arise, and, in a nutshell, do what it takes to make sure that the trip is successful. You can relax knowing you'll be in good hands with Get Up and Go!

GET UP AND GO! HIKING: There are great scheduled hikes nearly every day of every tour. The hikes are of varying lengths and difficulty levels, but all have in common dramatic scenery and 'larger than life' Alaskan beauty. Alaska hikes traverse a variety of terrains and eco-systems, from rolling tundra hills, to glacial gorges and moraines, to mountain ridges, to lush forests, to alpine meadows, and more. If there's anything that characterizes Alaska hiking, it's variety! And we are often able to offer more than one hiking option, so whether your goal is to climb every mountain in sight, simply to enjoy a more casual walk at your own pace, admiring the wildflowers, scenery, and wildlife, or something in between, you'll find a hike to suit you. The scenery always looks better when you experience it on foot, and long after you've returned home, the thing that you'll remember most about your Alaskan experience will be the beautiful hikes.

INCLUDED 'MULTI-SPORT' ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES: While the hiking is great, you'll also want to take advantage of the included and uniquely Alaskan adventure sport activities that are the real highlights of the tours. Sea kayaking to glaciers and/or close to wildlife, glacier trekking or ice climbing, whitewater rafting a raging Alaskan mountain river and lake canoeing are all included activities on many of our Camp & Cabin-based Multi-Sport / Hiking tours. Fishing and horseback riding, not to mention wildlife and glacier cruises and scenic "flightseeing" tours and other exciting activities are also optionally available on most tours. See our Activities Comparison Chart for details.

Never tried some of these before? Don't worry, no previous experience is necessary; they're fully guided, easier, and safer than they might seem, and a tremendous amount of fun. A Get Up and Go! Tours trip can be the perfect opportunity to safely try these exciting and fast-growing adventure activities for yourself. Your guide will organize the optional activities for you, and, if not already included in the tour price, they are payable locally. Credit cards are accepted.

NATURAL HISTORY INFORMATION: All Get Up and Go! tours feature daily activity briefings and "set the scene" commentary from your guides on the human and natural history of places we visit. This friendly, casually presented commentary helps to bring the people, places, landforms, flora and fauna alive for our clients, and is one of the things that really distinguishes our tours. If you've been fortunate to have knowledgeable guides in the past then you know how much this can add to your overall experience. It's even part of our motto: "Get Up and Go! Tours: Active, Informative, Fun!

"Many thanks for a wonderful tour of Alaska. The scenery, hikes, and your expert knowledge have more than overcome my 'fears' of camping." --Mick Thake, England

WHAT'S FOR DINNER?

DELICIOUS, NUTRITIOUS, FRESHLY PREPARED, AND AMPLE FOOD:
Just because you're camping doesn't mean you have to live off hotdogs and canned beans. To the contrary, we eat exceptionally well on Get Up and Go! tours. Many even go so far as to call the food one of the highlights!

Most meals during the tour are eaten in camp (except lunches, which are often enjoyed at a scenic viewpoint of a hiking trail), and are covered by an affordable pre-trip food payment, as specified in the literature for each tour. Your guides will do all the shopping and prepare the meals. The few non-included meals are taken at restaurants, lodges, or on the ferry and are paid for individually.

Breakfast is usually buffet style, with fresh fruits, cereals, yogurt, orange juice, and hot beverages. Hot oatmeal, toasted muffins, and hot coffee, tea, and chocolate are served every morning (well, almost), and occasionally your guides will spoil you with blueberry pancakes, bacon and eggs, French toast, salmon, biscuits and gravy, or some other hot breakfast treat. We generally either pack our own lunches in the mornings to take with us on our hikes, or else picnic along the way.

Multi-course dinners featuring ample portions of fresh, wholesome, delicious foods are the norm. A typical dinner might be grilled Alaskan Copper River red sockeye salmon with a mango chutney sauce, roasted red potatoes, Caesar salad, and garlic bread, followed by a delicious desert. And wait 'till you see what your guides can do with a Dutch oven! We don't cut corners at mealtime! With advance notice, accommodations are happily made for vegetarians and most other special diets.

WHAT'S THE RUSH?

WELL-DESIGNED ITINERARIES & MULTI-NIGHT STOPS: A big advantage of all Get Up and Go! tours is the leisurely pace of our itineraries. Rather than packing up camp and driving every day with just a little time in the afternoons for hikes, our tours feature a majority of 2 and 3-night stops, giving us more time to enjoy the beautiful Alaskan country you came to see, more time to hike, and more free time to relax.

"I had a wonderful time on the trip to Alaska. Despite my young years I consider myself a seasoned traveler, and that vacation was definitely one of the best. I trust I will have the opportunity to visit Alaska again, and I will most definitely use your outfit! Not only was I astounded by the gratifying scenery, I was dazzled by the knowledge, energy, and dedication of your guides, as well as the destination selections. I am spreading the word to friends and family this very moment!

"Thanks for giving me the opportunity to view Alaska in the best way possible. Good luck with the future of your already fantastic company!
--Merisa Titlow, Boston University

ANOTHER CLIENT TESTIMONIAL:

"You cannot go wrong with Get Up and Go Tours! My husband and I are semi-outdoorsy type people; we like being outdoors during the day and also enjoy our comforts at night...surprisingly though, camping was great. We sat around the fire at night with our newly made friends and enjoyed stories while watchingfor the Aurora Borealis. Our guide Geoff prepared some unbelievable campside meals. We made some life-long friends through this trip, bonding over the mealtimes, and during the outdoor activities. And we didn't even go (on the trip) to meet people...that ended up being an unexpected bonus!

You will hit all of the hot spots without alot of crowds...The driving time was minimal and was very interesting thanks to stops at scenic locations for lunch and short day hikes. Geoff was an excellent manager of people and seemed to know where his clients wanted to hike, what they wanted to eat and when they needed a break! Our group actually went to an end of the year party with the locals in the very smalland remote town of Kennicott, AK. It was great fun! You will see plenty of wildlife. Go whitewater rafting as well as on a glacier hike. This was my favorite activity. We hiked to the top of the glacier and a sled dog greeted us with enthusiasm...I was fascinated because we had no idea where he came from! ...

We're happy to talk to as many potential clients as you can send us, because we have nothing but good things to say about you and your company. We'll never forget our trip to Alaska with Get Up and Go! Tours, and hope very much to return again some day."
